My aquarium

The first thing we need to think about is the size of your aquarium. Much easier to maintain in good condition a large volume of sea water than small. The minimum size of marine aquarium should be 100 x 50 x 50 cm the larger the aquarium you can afford, the better.

Technically, the organization of the aquarium with sea or brackish water is absolutely the same as freshwater. The main difference is only that in water you need to add salt. Since this water is in increasingly corrosive than freshwater, aquarium eliminated any metal objects. The destruction of the metal in the water can lead to poisoning of fish.

All items used for preparation of water and irrigation of the soil (buckets, colanders, spoons etc.), should be plastic. If you have an external thermostat, stick them to the glass and do not hang on the wall of the aquarium with the help of metal hooks with which they are sold. The same applies to the combined instrument heater-thermostat Even fixing of luminescent lamps to the cover must be non-metallic.

For most of us to use clean seawater is not possible, because either we live too far from the sea, or the seawater is heavily polluted. Manufacturers produce salt for artificial sea water at the correct ratio of minerals that the fish need. You just have to mix the salt with tap water in accordance with instructions to obtain the required specific gravity of the final solution.

Specific gravity (density) determined by hydrometer, the scale of which shows the total amount of dissolved salts in water.

This can be done in another way, by estimating how many grams of salt are contained in a liter of water, but in the Amateur purposes typically use the term SW. This value depends on the water temperature. For example, the salinity of 17.2 gmol/l would correspond to HC 1,020 at 15°C and 1,017 at 25°C.

For aquariums with brackish water SW may be different depending on the nature of Pisces: the water here is nearly fresh to marine. Most of these species inhabit estuaries, where the salinity of the water is changed every hour in connection with the high and low tide.

In such aquarium the best result is obtained when using half the amount of salt recommended for marine aquarium.

In the process of evaporation is lost only water, salt remains in the tank, therefore; adding the aquarium salt water you increase its SW. In the middle of summer, when evaporation increases, top up the aquarium with fresh water.

If you partially change the water in the aquarium, replacing it with a new salt, be sure to check HC. A well-fitting glass will reduce water loss from evaporation.

In the period of maturation of the aquarium is very important to control the content in water of ammonium and nitrite and to ensure that filtration system is working properly. The length of maturation may be different, and there is no need to speed up the process, so be patient and let nature do its thing. Slowly but surely is better than fast and bad!

The use of protein traps in the filter system at an early stage will help to reduce the amount of harmful substances. Many fans of marine aquariums have no idea how you can arrange a new aquarium without a protein trap.

The light intensity depends on who you are going to keep in the aquarium. It is solely about fish. Light in fish tanks should be enough just to see them.

If you are going to keep marine invertebrates, aquarium lighting is a separate problem that will help you solve other special editions. For most aquariums only two fluorescent lamps: daylight and actinic blue. The latter will bring out the color in fish, because the red rays are absorbed stronger than sea water, they will not illuminate your aquarium like actinic well pass through the water column.

The design of marine aquarium

The best primer for marine aquarium coral sand, but it’s expensive. Many prefer to use large pieces of tufa as a base to which are spiked coral sand. So it does not slip between pieces of tufa, put them on before adding coral sand bags with gravel.

The tufa will form the basis of your reef. It is a very friable material, it must not be glued, so you can reliably attach individual pieces. If the fish will podkopat your soil, the result is deplorable: broken aquarium will be filled with sex and have to explain myself with the household. Firmly place the stones at the bottom, choose large pieces that are harder to move than small ones. Tuff can be replaced by volcanic rock, it is darker and has a different structure.

Depending on what fish you keep, you can add fragments of large sea shells as refuges for some species. When using shells check will they become traps for fish. Dead corals are also available, but how ethical is up to you.

Corals are mined in large quantities, damaging reefs, destroying living organisms. Much more humane to place your aquariums artificial corals. When they grow the algae, they look pretty good.

No matter what design you prefer will ensure that water is freely washed the entire aquarium. Behind the rocks is convenient to hide the heater thermostat, but you have to have access to it to repair, without disturbing the decor. The water should cover the heater, preventing it from overheating.

Your reef can be supplemented with a certain amount of “living stones”, but make sure to light enough of their content. Now “living stones” are bred on farms to preserve the natural reefs.

Making brackish-water aquarium

For the design of brackish aquarium can be used stones, plants and wood, but do not forget to check the resistance of plants to salt. A brackish aquarium has all the properties of freshwater.

The difference between them is that in the brackish-water aquarium, of course, add salt, and therefore in the system should not be metallic objects.
